Hello everybody, to Tom’s sports and fitness blog. I am of course Tom, and I would like to thank you for choosing this blog. Now, onto the meat of this post. I assume you all know about the Terrible Towel, right? It has been a symbol of the our home town heroes the Pittsburgh Steelers for decades, and some say it’s magic. I have recently bought a bunch of them online, I found a website that has lots of used goods and buy used sports memorabilia for cheap.
And now I use http://www.cheap.forsale/ for all my online shopping. Now, I take great care of all the Terrible Towels I bought. The ones I got online are handed out at the house for a football game, and are collected after the game expecting them to be in the same condition. Most of my guests understand as there are issues that arise for those who disrespect the towel.
Opponents Reacting badly
Ever since the Terrible Towel was first waved at a Pittsburgh sporting event, many opposing teams have shown disrespect or even defaced the towel. This never ends well for the opposing team, and it some cases the curse follows the player who was responsible for the disrespect. The curse does not limit itself to football matches, and has been seen affecting opponents of the Pittsburgh Penguins as well. As a Pittsburgh native, this is something that always stays in my football bag.
In 1994 before the playoff matchup between the longtime rivals Cleveland Browns and the Steelers, a Steelers defensive lineman dropped a towel he was waving during the introductions. A Browns running back then stomped on the towel, and is cited as saying “We don’t care about your towel. We are going to beat you this time”. This action upset many members of the Steelers, and provoked some slight mingling on the field. The Browns would go on to lose the game 29-9.
During a game with the Cincinnati Bengals on December 4th, 2005, one of the tight ends for the Bengals wiped his feet with the towel after scoring a touchdown. Although the Bengals would go on to win this game by a measly 7 points, the two teams would meet again in the Wild Card round of the playoffs where the Steelers won 31-17 an also injured quarterback Carson Palmer, marking the start of the end of his career in Cincy. The Bengals would not reach the playoffs again until the team member who had stomped on the towel was released.
On October 8th os 2008, the Steelers had a regular season matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars were 2-2 at this point, and looking to have a decent season for once. This plan was halted after Jaguars mascot Jaxson De Ville produced a Terrible Towel alongside the cheerleaders and proceeded to wipe his armpits and butt with the towel. The Steelers suddenly took control of the game with only a quarter left and beat the Jaguars 26-21. The Jaguars would go on to lose their next 8 games.
LenDale White and Keith Bulluck of the Tennessee Titans were seen stomping on some Terrible Towels after beating the Steelers 31-14. Steelers players accepted this act, as it was a humiliating loss. The Titans however went from being the first seed in the playoffs to losing 8 consecutive games, including a playoff game and a season opener against the Steelers. After the final lose(58-0 at the hands of New England) Titans coach Jeff Fisher publicly apologized for his team’s misbehavior against the Terrible Towel.
Before the 2009 Super Bowl between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers, the mayor of Phoenix produced a Terrible Towel and asked the Cardinals mascot; Big Red; to wipe his armpits with the towel. The mayor then used the Terrible Towel to blow his nose before the end of the send off for the Cardinals. The Steelers would go on to beat the Cardinals in the Super Bowl 27-23.
A hockey game this time. Earlier this year in a game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Florida Panthers, the Panthers mascot blew his nose with a Terrible Towel while the Penguins were down 2-0. The Penguins would rally to tie the game, and come out with an overtime win. The Panthers would go on to lose the in the first round of playoffs whilst the Penguins hoisted the Stanley Cup that spring.
Cincinnati Bengals V2
Just last night during a game in Paul Brown Stadium, Bengals running back Jeremy Hill attempted to rip a Terrible Towel in half after scoring a touchdown. After this act, Hill only got the ball six times for negative one yard, and the Bengals would not score another point that game; falling to the Steelers. This lose also eliminated Cincinnati from the playoffs.
