baseball, sports equiptment, team sports

Baseball training rarely involves having a full team game of pitchers, fielders etc. Manufacturers have produced equipment that are now used by any pro or college teams.

For pitchers there are a host of radar guns on the market. Radar guns essentially record the pitchers speed and the speed of the ball. For batters, most use a batting cage for training purposes. When using a batting cage there is obviously no need for fielders as the mesh and steel structure contain the batted balls to a small area. Batting cages are also used a lot with pitching machines for practice, this saves a lot of time meaning more practice can be achieved. The batting cages can range in size with some as small as golfing nets.

Batting tees have always been hugely popular with baseball players. These are a key training aid for all batters and have become a minor sport in themselves. Batting tees help players improve their swing and the baseball is placed on a tee, so there is no need for a pitcher during these training sessions.

Pitching machines can be expensive but are also necessary for serious batters to practice with. As with all ball games practice, and more practice is the only way to improve and good pitchers are not always available for training purposes. Pitching machines massively improve the batters hand / eye coordination and are much more useful than a batting tee.

Although some of these training aids can be expensive, they will certainly improve your teams performance.

Hi everyone! Welcome back to my sports and fitness blog. Today, I wanted to talk to you all about  team sports and children.  I recently enrolled my daughter into a football club after months of her asking me to, and boy do I wish I’d done it sooner.  I bought her some new equipment from and she has been tearing down the field every Wednesday afternoon since, come rain, snow or shine.  There’s many reasons I regret not enrolling her sooner, as sports teams provides so many benefits for both children and adults.

  1. Teamwork
Participating in group sports can help build friendships with both the other team members as well as the coaches.  It can also put winning into perspective and encourage team members to recognise and appreciate each other for the effort they put in rather than just their abilities.  There’s also much to be said for working towards the same goal, and having a group alongside you trying to accomplish that goal can be great for camaraderie.
  2. Learning to accept feedback.
One of the hardest things to learn is the to accept criticism, both constructive and otherwise.  To accept feedback and then improve in sports, you must be teachable, and have to be receptive to working on that feedback.  Sports are played in an informal setting which creates an open environment where feedback can be given and received without any impact on your everyday life.  The feedback that you get in team sports, is likely to be applicable in your work and life off the pitch.
  3. Communicating.
When playing a team sport you have to be very clear and concise in your communication, especially whilst in the middle of a game.  You also have to be very self aware of your strengths and weaknesses as well as others.  Being able to openly discuss everyone’s strengths and how they play into the team can be invaluable, and help build self confidence as well as team confidence.
  4. Focus.
Participating in a team sport makes you think as part of a team.  During a match this team spirit alongside how you fit into your team will make sure that you focus on your join in the team and make sure you’re on the ball at all times.  Most team sports have a specific time frame and a deadline when the game is finished.  This forces focus and encourages others to focus as well.
  5. De-stress.
Any form of exercise can help with stress management.  Focusing on a game and being a part of a larger team can also help relieve stress.  Team sports can also have a lot of conflicts, and learning how to resolve these efficiently will help you in everyday life.

There’s so many other reasons to participate in team sports that I haven’t been able to touch on here.  Just make sure you enjoy yourself and read this article from a few weeks ago if you need any tips for what to keep in your football bag.

And to any Football fans out there, it seems the Terrible Towel is continuing it’s magic powers.  So excited to see Steelers play in next weeks Conference match.

A man has been jailed for over 2 years for the attempted break in at Wayne Rooney’s home. Ex military serviceman, Robert Mcnamara was dealt the sentence at Chester Crown court. The attempted break in happened whilst Rooney and his family attended his own testimonial game, with a Manchester Utd eleven facing his original club Everton, in the charity match. Mcnamara, from Scarborough, pleaded guilty to trespassing with intent to steal at the football stars 6m GBP mansion, in rural Cheshire, South West of Manchester.

Rooney’s wife and 3 children were all at the game on the night in question. Rooney’s wife has since stated they have upgraded  security at their home, but also said she has had sleepless nights and no longer feels comfortable at home, unless accompanied.

Security cameras at the stars house clearly showed Mcnamara walking around the mansion grounds, wearing a balaclava and trying to turn a door knob which set off the alarms. Once arrested police searched his house and found a ski mask with black tape over the eye holes and suspected this may of been intended to use as a blindfold.

Mcnamara’s lawyer, Taryn Jones Turner, said her client had served for 7 years in the military and wasn’t finding being back in civilian life as easy as he had expected. She also stated since leaving the military her client had mental health issues and was being assisted with this by British Legion counsellors.

Altogether a pretty disturbing experience for someone like Rooney, with him and his young family constantly in the media spotlight.

Hello  everybody, to Tom’s sports and fitness blog. I am of course Tom, and I would like to thank you for choosing this blog. Now, onto the meat of this post. I assume you all know about the Terrible Towel, right? It has been a symbol of the our home town heroes the Pittsburgh Steelers for decades, and some say it’s magic. I have recently bought a bunch of them online, I found a website that has lots of used goods and buy used sports memorabilia for cheap at

And now I use for all my online shopping. Now, I take great care of all the Terrible Towels I bought. The ones I got online are handed out at the house for a football game, and are collected after the game expecting them to be in the same condition. Most of my guests understand as there are issues that arise for those who disrespect the towel.

Terrible Towel

Opponents Reacting badly

Ever since the Terrible Towel was first waved at a Pittsburgh sporting event, many opposing teams have shown disrespect or even defaced the towel. This never ends well for the opposing team, and it some cases the curse follows the player who was responsible for the disrespect. The curse does not limit itself to football matches, and has been seen affecting opponents of the Pittsburgh Penguins as well. As a Pittsburgh native, this is something that always stays in my football bag.

Cleveland Browns

In 1994 before the playoff matchup between the longtime rivals Cleveland Browns and the Steelers, a Steelers defensive lineman dropped a towel he was waving during the introductions. A Browns running back then stomped on the towel, and is cited as saying “We don’t care about your towel. We are going to beat you this time”. This action upset many members of the Steelers, and provoked some slight mingling on the field. The Browns would go on to lose the game 29-9.

Cincinnati Bengals

During a game with the Cincinnati Bengals on December 4th, 2005, one of the tight ends for the Bengals wiped his feet with the towel after scoring a touchdown. Although the Bengals would go on to win this game by a measly 7 points, the two teams would meet again in the Wild Card round of the playoffs where the Steelers won 31-17 an also injured quarterback Carson Palmer, marking the start of the end of his career in Cincy. The Bengals would not reach the playoffs again until the team member who had stomped on the towel was released.

Jacksonville Jaguars

On October 8th os 2008, the Steelers had a regular season matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars were 2-2 at this point, and looking to have a decent season for once. This plan was halted after Jaguars mascot Jaxson De Ville produced a Terrible Towel alongside the cheerleaders and proceeded to wipe his armpits and butt with the towel. The Steelers suddenly took control of the game with only a quarter left and beat the Jaguars 26-21. The Jaguars would go on to lose their next 8 games.

Terrible Towel

Tennessee Titans

LenDale White and Keith Bulluck of the Tennessee Titans were seen stomping on some Terrible Towels after beating the Steelers 31-14. Steelers players accepted this act, as it was a humiliating loss. The Titans however went from being the first seed in the playoffs to losing 8 consecutive games, including a playoff game and a season opener against the Steelers. After the final lose(58-0 at the hands of New England) Titans coach Jeff Fisher publicly apologized for his team’s misbehavior against the Terrible Towel.

Arizona Cardinals

Before the 2009 Super Bowl between the Arizona Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Steelers, the mayor of Phoenix produced a Terrible Towel and asked the Cardinals mascot; Big Red; to wipe his armpits with the towel. The mayor then used the Terrible Towel to blow his nose before the end of the send off for the Cardinals. The Steelers would go on to beat the Cardinals in the Super Bowl 27-23.

Florida Panthers

A hockey game this time. Earlier this year in a game between the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Florida Panthers, the Panthers mascot blew his nose with a Terrible Towel while the Penguins were down 2-0. The Penguins would rally to tie the game, and come out with an overtime win. The Panthers would go on to lose the in the first round of playoffs whilst the Penguins hoisted the Stanley Cup that spring.

Cincinnati Bengals V2

Just last night during a game in Paul Brown Stadium, Bengals running back Jeremy Hill attempted to rip a Terrible Towel in half after scoring a touchdown. After this act, Hill only got the ball six times for negative one yard, and the Bengals would not score another point that game; falling to the Steelers. This lose also eliminated Cincinnati from the playoffs.

fishing, sports, water sport

Hey guys, hope yinz are doing well. It is Tom back again with another post for my sports and fitness blog, this time talking about a water sport many of you probably have not heard of-Catfish Noodling. Now, I assume that most of you have gone fishing before yes? Well, catfish noodling is a type of fishing, but you don’t use a rod. Instead you use your bare hands to search around in muddy water for a catfish! Doesn’t that sound exciting! Did I say exciting? I meant terrifying! If you guys didn’t have catfish around when you were young, consider yourself lucky. These dopey looking fish can have a mean bite. Did I mention that you are supposed to make them bite you when your noodle?

Catfish Noodling is actually a fairly popular sport in the South, with many states having competitions for it. The idea behind catfish noodling is that you find a tree in the swamp water, and then reach your hand under the tree beneath the water. There are small crevices where two types of animals are typically found hiding: catfish and snapping turtles. I don’t quite know the percentage of people who find snapping turtle versus finding a catfish, but I would assume it happens fairly often. I really don’t know what would possess someone to try and fish like this, especially for a catfish. If anything the turtle would be a better haul and have better meat, but they are endangered in the U.S. so that might not be the best idea. I don’t know if I will ever try this for myself, but if you have make sure to let me know! I would love to hear from someone who went noodling, for either catfish or snapping turtle. Take it easy everyone, I will see you all next week.

Go Catfish Noodling

football, sports, sports equiptment

Hey guys, Tom here again with a hard hitting(hehe) sports post for you guys. Yes I am talking football. I love football, and if you are a local reading this blog then I know you do to. Whether it be the Steelers or Pitt State, I watched every game at Three Rivers Stadium for 10 years, and have kept that tradition up with Heinz Field. My sons are starting to play now too. The youngest is on the atom team in town and my oldest starts his rookie year for the high school team this year. As someone who played his gridiron career with cheap second hand equipment I wanted to ensure that my kids had it better, so I went shopping with them and we got some bags full of gear now. Of course, some of the stuff isn’t football gear but just something generic to have with you that can be extremely helpful.

Other than all your necessary gear, you want some additional gear to level the playing field against everyone else who already has it. The first part of this is gloves. I recommend Cutters, they stick better than anyone else. Nike also has some good one that let you move your hand roe, but they are not padded. Next of is a visor, preferably a reflective one but a lot of youth leagues won’t allow this as it interferes with doctors looking for a concussion. Nevertheless, having a chrome or amber reflective visor can help you before the snap has started. You also want some basic gear in your bag: some painkillers(ibuprofen), cough candies for before the game, some breath strips can be good too. Make sure to always check this stuff though, as it can go bad. Take it easy everyone, see you all next time.

fitness, sports

Hi everyone, welcome to my Sports and Fitness blog. My name is Tom, and I have been an athlete ever since I was a young boy, and growing up in Pittsburgh is very accommodating to that. Every day I would swim in the Three Rivers, and as I got older and stronger I eventually made it across. It took a lot of hard training, but I got the results I wanted. That’s why I made this blog, to help people get the results they want from workouts and sports. I am a workout fiend, possibly because I keep trying to find out where James Harrison is working out but also because I like the rush it give me. Other than just working out, I love to play basketball, football, and hockey.

I hope that I can answer any questions you guys have about sports and fitness. If there is any classes you would like me to take and report back to you on, then please leave a comment. If you guys would like to read what I have to say about an event in the sports world, then please leave a comment. Basically if you want to know anything that I haven’t covered, please leave a comment. Bye Bye.
